Starting April 8, China's railway authority will launch a pilot pet check-in service on select Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail trains, offering "isolated transportation, separation of humans and pets, and dedicated care." The service follows a "same departure, same arrival" policy, ensuring that pets and their owners depart and arrive at their destinations simultaneously.
According to China Railway Express, the pilot program covers five stations: Beijingnan, Jinanxi, Nanjingnan, Shanghai Hongqiao, and Hangzhoudong, involving 10 train services including G119/118 and G121/122. Compared to traditional railway or road transportation, high-speed rail's significantly reduces transit time, lowering stress risks for pets.
Following the official announcement, many pet owners praised the railway system's increasingly diverse and human-centered services on social media. However, concerns were raised about potential hygiene issues, noise, and passenger space allocation. To address these, the service takes the following measures.
First, equipped with air circulation, temperature/humidity monitoring, noise reduction, and odor control functions, specialized pet transport containers will be fully sealed throughout the journey. These containers will be placed in storage compartments within the central carriages to avoid impacting passenger environments.
Second, pets will be stored independently for the entire duration, ensuring physical separation between humans and animals. The cargo space for pets will remain isolated from passenger areas, and staff will not open the containers during transit to guarantee safety and hygiene.
Third, monitoring and supervision will be intensified with dedicated personnel. Train staff will conduct inspections every two hours to replenish drinking water as needed. Immediately after the journey, both the containers and storage compartments will undergo thorough disinfection.
Passengers can book the service via the 12306 system at least two days in advance. Each traveler is limited to one healthy, domestic cat or dog, weighing no more than 15 kilograms and with a shoulder height under 40 cm.
